After Covid ‘s message, Donald Trump Jr stopped tweeting
For 12 hours, Twitter has barred the eldest son of the US President from tweeting.
The penalty followed a message from Donald Trump Jr. that included a video that explored the advantages of hydroxychloroquine.
Some, like President Trump, proposed the role of the drug as a preventive measure against coronavirus, despite scientific reports suggesting the contrary.
Twitter said the tweet had violated its guidelines on Covid-19 misinformation.
During the meantime, Donald Trump Jr will still be able to search Facebook and send out direct messages.
Twitter told the BBC: “We are taking action in line with our policy.”
All the big U.S. social media sites have taken action to crack down on coronavirus misinformation.
Andy Surabian, a Donald Trump Jr spokesperson told the BBC that the decision was “beyond the pale.”
“Twitter suspending Don Jr for sharing a viral video of medical professionals discussing their views on Hydroxychloroquine is further proof that big tech is intent on killing free expression online, and is another instance of them committing election interference to stifle Republican voices,” he said.
“While there is indeed much disagreement in the medical community about the efficacy of Hydroxychloroquine in treating coronavirus, there have been studies reported by mainstream outlets like CNN, suggesting that it may in fact by an effective treatment.
“Those pretending otherwise are lying for political reasons.”
