In electing a new leader, the Party will remain united: Ranil
United National Party chief Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday that his party would decide who the next UNP chief will be “when the time is right”,
days after a UNP senior voiced openly in his election campaigns for a change in leadership.
Mr. Wickremesinghe told Daily Mirror that the decision would be taken at the right time, but he said it would be on one condition only, and that is that UNP must remain unified in its decision on the new leader.
That is the one condition I have,” Wickremesinghe said.
UNP National Organizer and Nuwara Eliya District UNP nominee Navin Dissanayake recently said it was appropriate to change UNP leadership, which had remained unchanged for 26 years , adding that he had the requisite qualifications to become the party leader.
Dissanayake said he was seeking a change of leadership because the same person who had been leader for 26 years could not continue to be the party’s leader.
He further said the new leader would be elected via a secret ballot, as this was a democratic process that was done in compliance with the constitution of the party without creating any split within.
