Voters at quarantine centres may lose chance for voting
Voters at the quarantine centers are likely to miss the opportunity to cast their ballots at the August 5th general election due to the lack of legal arrangements to arrange for them to vote in advance, an official said yesterday.
As the legislation does not allow for it, the Election Commission has already revoked its previous decision to hold polling for them on July 31.
Asked about the latest situation, Mahinda Deshapriya, its chairman, told Daily Mirror polling would most likely not be taken at quarantine centres. He said however that the final decision on such voters would be taken at the meeting of the Commission scheduled for August 1.
“We will not take polling at the quarantine centres,” he said.
He said at the moment it will be under 500 people living in the quarantine centres. However, he said there would be different arrangements for those under self-quarantine to cast their ballots at special booths on polling day.
